미국 주요 대학 부가 에세이 거의 나왔다
각 대학이 부가 에세이 제시하는 이유... 자기 색깔 학생 뽑기 위해
공통원서 에세이보다 더 까다로운 경우 많아
미국의 많은 대학들이 Common App을 기본 지원 양식으로 사용하고 있다. 그래서 학생들은 이 원서 양식에 첨부돼 있는 기본 에세이를 써야 한다. 그런데 대학들은 이 기본 에세이 외에 각 대학별로 별도의 부가 에세이를 쓸 것을 요구하고 있다. 각 대학별 부가 에세이 주제는 매우 다양하다. 학생이 가장 좋아하는 간식에 대한 질문부터 꿈의 세미나 설계에 이르기까지, 많은 대학은 입학 사정관이 지원자에 대해 최대한 많은 것을 알 수 있도록 창의적인 보충 질문을 만들어내고 있다.
금년도(2023-24학년도) 각 대학별 부가 에세이 주제
많은 대학이 8월 1일 공통 지원서 공식 오픈에 앞서 몇 주 동안 추가 에세이 문항을 발표한다. 공통 지원서 에세이 프롬프트는 이번 주기에도 이미 제공되므로 올가을 대학에 지원하는 학생들은 자기소개서를 미리 준비할 수 있다. 다가오는 입학 주기에 대한 프롬프트에 액세스할 수 있다면 고학년이 되기 전 여름에 보충 자료 작성을 시작하는 것이 좋다.
여름 방학 중에는 각 대학들이 발표한 부가 에세이 주제에 대해 생각해 보고, 이를 쓰기 시작해야 한다.
그런데 정말 답답하게 많은 학생이 이를 팽개쳐놓고, SAT 학원에 가서 하루 종일 시간을 보내고 있으니 한마디로 복장이 터질 노릇이다. SAT 점수를 안 받는 대학이 미국 대학의 75%가 넘는데 말이다. 물론 좋은 SAT 점수를 확보했다면 당연히 제출해야 하겠지만 도저히 점수를 내 봐도 소용이 없는 점수에 매달리는 것을 보면 안타깝다.
금년에도 각 대학들의 부가 에세이가 거의 다 제시됐다.
우선 하버드 대학 에세이를 보자.

결코 만만하지 않다. 많은 생각을 하고 나서 쓸 수 있는 에세이다.
따라서 남은 방학 기간 동안 지원할 대학, 특히 Early로 지원할 대학들을 먼저 결정하고 이들 대학들이 제시한 부가 에세이를 충분한 시간을 갖고 브레인스토밍을 해야 한다.
