2022 Quirky College Essay Prompts

Here are some of our favorite quirky college application essay prompts from the 2022-23 college admissions season:

금년도 미국 대학입시에서도 예외없이 각 대학별 부가 에세이를 써야 한다. 부가 에세이 주제를 보면 "왜 우리 학교에 지원하니?" 처럼 매우 평범하고 평탄한 주제를 제시하는 대학도 있다. 그러나 아주 까탈스런 주제를 제시하는 대학도 많다.

옥시덴탈 칼리지는 "네가 룸메이트를 처음 만날 때 들려줄 노래가 뭐니?"라고 묻는다. 참 뜽금없는 질문이다.

포모나 대학은 " 포모나칼리지에서는 47번 숫자를 기념한다. 너의 개인, 가족 또는 지역사회의 전통 중 하나와 네가 그것을 고수하는 이유를 우리와 공유해라"를 요구하고 있다.

참 쉽지 않은 주제들이다.

오늘은 미국 대학들 가운데 유별난 부가 에세이를 요구하는 대학들의 부가 에세이 주제를 살펴본다.

▶ Bowdoin College: Generations of students have found connection and meaning in Bowdoin’s “The Offer of the College,” written in 1906 by Bowdoin President William DeWitt Hyde. Which line from The Offer resonates most with you?

To be at home in all lands and all ages;

to count Nature a familiar acquaintance,

and Art an intimate friend;

to gain a standard for the appreciation of others’ work

and the criticism of your own;

to carry the keys of the world’s library in your pocket,

and feel its resources behind you in whatever task you undertake;

to make hosts of friends…who are to be leaders in all walks of life;

to lose yourself in generous enthusiasms and cooperate with others for common ends –

this is the offer of the college for the best four years of your life.

이런 에세이를 쓸 때 요구되는 것은 평범함이 아닌 창의적 사고다. 이런 에세이를 쓰기 위해서는 많은 생각을 해야 한다. 즉 브레인 스토밍을 해야 한다. 그래서 충분한 시간을 두고 지원할 대학들을 선정하고, 그 대학의 부가 에세이를 리스트 한 다음에 오래 생각을 해야 한다. 원서 마감을 앞두고 아직 지원 대학조차 선정하지 못한 학생들을 자주 만난다.

필자의 도움을 받고 있는 학생들은 지난 6-7월부터 대학 리스트를 정하고, 에세이들을 준비시킨다. 물론 아직도 대학 선정에 고민하는 학생들도 없지 않다. <미래교육연구소장 이강렬 박사>
