에세이는 미국 상위권 대학에 핵심적인 입학 사정 요소다. 11학년들은 지금부터 에세이를 준비해도 빠르지 않다. 일반적인 공통원서 에세이 제시 주제 외에 대학별로 기발난 에세이 주제를 주는 경우가 많다.
2023-24학년도 대학 입학 시즌에 가장 인기 있는 기발한 대학 지원 에세이 문항 몇 가지를 소개한다.
다트머스 대학 에세이는 '괴짜의 면모를 보여라'고 주제를 주었다.
포모나 대학은 "포모나에서는 47이라는 숫자를 기념하고 동일시한다. 개인, 가족 또는 커뮤니티의 특이한 전통 중 하나를 소개하고 그 전통을 고수하는 이유를 공유해라"고 주었다.
스탠포드 대학은 " 지금 이 순간 내 인생의 사운드트랙을 대표하는 노래는 무엇인가요?"라고 주제를 주었다

▶Pomona College: At Pomona, we celebrate and identify with the number 47. Share with us one of your quirky personal, family, or community traditions and why you hold on to it.
▶Princeton University: What song represents the soundtrack of your life at this moment?
▶Stanford University: What historical moment or event do you wish you could have witnessed?
▶University of Chicago: A jellyfish is not a fish. Cat burglars don’t burgle cats. Rhode Island is not an island. Write an essay about some other misnomer, and either come up with and defend a new name for it or explain why its inaccurate name should be kept.
▶University of Richmond: Tell us about a time you learned something unexpected. What did you learn, and what happened next?
▶University of Vermont: Established in Burlington, VT, Ben & Jerry’s is synonymous with both ice cream and social change.
