'11학년들이 책을 읽을 시간이 어디있어? SAT공부해야지...'라고 말하는 11학년 학부모들이 많을 것이다. 이제 거의 모든 미국 고등학교와 국내 국제학교들이 겨울 방학에 들어갔다.

11학년들이 겨울 방학에 무엇을 해야 하나?

어떤 학생은 SAT 학원에 등록을 해서 열심히 내년에 처음 치러지는 뉴 SAT 준비에 박차를 가할 것이다.

또 어떤 학생은 IB과정이나 AP과목 중 부족한 과목을 개인 과외나 학원에서 배울 것이다.

어떤 학생은 액티비티가 중요하다며 인턴을 하거나 학원 경시대회 반에 들어가서 공부를 할 것이다. 나름의 액티비티에 시간을 쏟는 학생들이 많을 것이다.

모두 괜찮다. 그러나 꼭 빼먹어서는 안 되는 일이 있다. 바로 책을 읽는 것이다. 누구는 바쁜 데 웬 책을 읽으라고 하느냐고 짜증을 낼지 모른다. 그러나 거의 모든 11학년 학부모, 학생들이 모르는 비밀이 있다. 바로 SAT는 독해 능력시험이라는 것, 그리고 학교성적 향상의 기본은 책을 읽어서 이해력을 높여야 한다는 것이다.

그래서 미국 명문 고등학교들은 학생들에게 독서 리스트를 주고, 반드시 읽게 한다. 그런데 국내 어느 국제학교도 학생들에게 독서리스트를 제공하고 의무적으로 읽게 하는 곳은 없다. 부모들도 책읽기를 시큰둥 하게 본다. 그러나 정말 중요한 요소라는 것을 모른다.

오늘은 미국 최고 명문 고등학교인 필립스 엑세터 학교가 11학년 학생들에게 추천한 책 리스트를 올린다. 다양한 장르를 막라하고 있다.
