센터 칼리지, 미국 의대-치대-약대-수의대 합격률 경이적 기록
SAT 평균 1130-1380점대로 그리 경쟁적이지 않다
최근 미국 의대를 가려는 학생들이 급격히 많아졌다.
일부 학부모들은 여전히 "국제학생들은 미국 의대에 가지 못한다면서요? 미국 시민권자나 영주권자만 갈 수 있다고 유튜브에서 들었습니다"라고 말을 한다. 그러나 이 말은 사실이 아니라고 필자가 유튜브와 블로그를 통해 알려드렸다. 국제학생들이 갈 수 있는 미국 대학은 49개나 된다.
오늘 그 리스트를 공개한다.
국제학생을 받아주는 미국 의과대학(49개)들이다. 여기에는 하버드 의대, 예일 의대, 조지타운 의대, 듀크 의대 등 미국에서 내놓으라하는 명문의과 대학들이 즐비하다. 문제는 이 의과대학에 갈 정도의 능력과 실력을 키우는 것이다. 그런데 미국 의대 합격률이 아이비리그 대학 합격률보다 높다.
아이비리그 대학들은 겁없이 지원을 하면서 왜 미국 의대는 미리부터 지레 겁을 먹는지 알 수 없다.

문제는 의과 대학에 갈 실력을 학부 과정에서 기르는 것이다. 의대에 많은 합격자를 내는 대학들은 역시 아이비리그다. 그러나 일부 대학들은 아이비리그 이상의 의과대학 합격률을 기록하고 있다.
오늘 그 대학 가운데 하나를 소개하려고 한다.
Centre College다. 이 대학은 미국 켄터키주 댄빌에 위치한 사립 리버럴 아츠 칼리지이다. 약 1,400명의 학생이 재학 중인 학부 대학이다. 센터는 1819년 켄터키 총회에서 공식적으로 허가되었다. 이 대학은 남부 연합 대학과 장로교 대학 협회의 회원이다. 이 대학은 전문 대학원, 즉 의대-치대-약대-경영대-수의대 등의 진학에 경이적인 기록을 보여주고 있다.
어떤 경우 의과 대학원 합격률이 100%를 보일 때도 있다. 지난해 의대 진학률이 83%다. 이런 수치는 미국 명문 주립/사립대( 연구중심대학)에서 찾아보기 어려운 기록이다. 치과대학원 합격률은 90%를 훨씬 넘는다. 이 대학에 처음 입학하는 학생들은 그리 뛰어나지 않다. 그러나 대학에 들어가서 공부를 하면서 바꾸는 것이다. 용광로에서 새로 태어난다고 하는 게 맞다.
그래서 필자는 미국 의대나 치대, 약대, 수의과 대학원에 가려는 학생들에게 이 대학을 반드시 소개한다. 다만 이 대학은 국제학생들에게는 재정보조를 주지 않는다는 단점이 있다. 그러나 미국 시민권자나 영주권자에게는 많은 재정보조를 많이 주는 편이다.
경제적 여유가 있고, 미국 의과대학에 가려는 중간급 학생이라면 이 대학에 과감히 도전할 것을 권한다. <미래교육연구소장 이강렬 박사>
